Why Should I Care…? | Gender and Sexuality

About this series:

Our ‘Why Should I Care?...’ series of talks is aimed at helping both Christians and non-Christians think through a varied series of topics connected with important matters in modern culture. This series will be designed to equip the church while also being accessible to non-Christians.

Our aim is to equip people of all ages with the tools to grapple with and think through complex issues - such as mental health, AI and gender and sexuality - in a biblical way.

About this talk:

It is five years since our Love Matters series, when we looked at biblical responses to singleness, marriage, sexuality and gender issues, in each case seeing that God has a better story for us to enter into. In just those five years so much has changed - what is taken for granted and assumed to be true (and not only by younger people) has shifted enormously. And in many cases the position taken by churches on these matters has moved a great deal too. We looked at this journey of change in the first week of the Love Matters series.

But in those years there has also been growing concern from many people about the implications of some of the changes in these areas. Questions such as: how do schools interact with parents and their children about these issues? Who should be able to use which public toilets? Are young people being encouraged at too young an age to determine their gender? Is too much experimentation harmful for young people? How do those who disagree with some of the changes in society have their voice heard and not end up silenced? How do workplaces and churches navigate people’s desires to use chosen pronouns?

It is true that some people are living more fulfilled lives now as a result of previous identity, sexual and relationship norms being challenged. But it is also the case that many people, particularly younger people, have been left more confused and, possibly, damaged.

So how does the Bible’s better story inform us? How might it impact what we see going on in culture? Is the Bible and its storyline able to empower people to flourish by aligning themselves with what God has to say about gender, identity, sexuality and relationships? And how can the Bible’s teaching be brought in such a way as to inspire and attract rather than repel?
