Jesus, Full of the Spirit

About this series

The aim of this series is to present some of the Bible’s teaching about the Holy Spirit in order to raise expectations of life in the new covenant. If Jesus said, “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (John 16:7), we want to ask: In what ways do these Scriptures show that the Holy Spirit being with us is “for your good”? Our expectations should certainly be raised!

Hopefully this series will help us grow in both our understanding and our experience of the Holy Spirit - personal, powerful presence of God with his people.

About this talk

Jesus is our model for all things. In every area of life, we can rightly encourage people to be more like Jesus. ‘The Christian is not left without a ‘norm’ to which he seeks to become adjusted. The Lord Jesus Christ is Himself the norm, the ideally perfect model, and the worshipping soul yearns to be like Him. Indeed the whole drive behind the Christian life is this longing to be conformed to the image of Christ’ (A. W. Tozer).

This first session in the series will focus on Jesus as the fulfilment of Old Testament promises, the pioneer of the new covenant and our model of a Spirit-filled life. While he was, of course, uniquely full of the Spirit, he is our model of life in the Spirit.

We will look at what John the Baptist meant when he said, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptise with the Holy Spirit.” We look at the following:

  • What is the Holy Spirit’s role in the life of a Christian?

  • What does it mean to be baptised with (and filled with) the Holy Spirit?

  • What can we learn from Jesus as the one who remained under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit?
