Rescue from Addiction: David’s Story

“My body was breaking down from years of substance abuse…and I came to Teen Challenge with no hope and not knowing what to expect.”

A few years ago, I was trapped in addiction—a struggle that had consumed me for many years. My body was breaking down from years of substance abuse, and I had reached a point where I didn’t know how much longer I could go on.

I didn’t have time for God. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure if He existed. I had called out to Him in moments of desperation, screaming, “Lord, if You’re real, help me!” But it always felt like my cries went unanswered.

When I came to Teen Challenge, I had no hope and no idea what to expect. I completed the full program, and during those 11 months, I began to learn about God and started working on basic life skills, like how to relate to the people around me. This was particularly difficult because I’ve always struggled with anxiety.

As I continued the program, I began praying and asking God for His help. Slowly, something inside me started to change, though I didn’t realise what it was at first. Eventually, I understood—God was working in me. My perspective on others shifted, I found it easier to interact with people, and my confidence soared. For the first time, I truly discovered who God is and how He works in my life.

After finishing the program, I returned to Bournemouth. Things were going great. I was involved in Bible study, volunteering at a care home, and serving at my local church, which I loved. But then, I made a foolish mistake—I relapsed into drug use. It didn’t last long, but I knew I needed help. I reached out to my support worker and asked if Teen Challenge would take me back. To my relief, they welcomed me with open arms.

I completed a six-month restoration program, during which I thought hard about my future. I decided to join the Teen Challenge Leadership Academy to deepen my relationship with God. It was, without a doubt, the best decision I’ve ever made.

From the moment I arrived at the Academy, I felt a deep sense of peace. I knew God was at work, and I had made the right choice. The teaching was incredible, and I even had the opportunity to lead chapel services, which helped me grow in public speaking.

What I’ve learned through all of this is that God is always there for us, no matter what we’ve done. Even in the darkest times, if we trust in Him, He will guide us and reveal His plan for our lives. I now place all my trust in the Lord, and I encourage you to do the same.
