Honour

About this series

As we come out of lockdown and hope to open up Sunday meetings again, is to look at what it means to be community - both church community and community more widely.

In the first 11 chapters of Romans, Paul has been outlining the gospel of Jesus Christ and what it means for both Jews and Gentiles. In chapter 12 he transitions to the practical matters of community life in light of the gospel - that they should live for God, use their gifts to serve one another and love each other sincerely.

About this talk

Romans 12:10b

Because we are family, equally loved by God who, in Christ, has valued us above his own comfort, we are to honour one another; and to do so above ourselves. This is what love looks like in practice - it thinks not of what can be gained for self and is happy to do all it can so the light shines on others.

All of this, of course, is rooted in the gospel that Paul has expounded in the first 11 chapters: ‘We have been so immeasurably honoured in mercy that not to prefer to honour as we have been honoured is to betray that we have not tasted the treasure of our salvation’ (John Piper).

We look at what honouring one another looks like in practice; and what it doesn’t mean.
