Sophie’s Story: My Journey Serving Refreshments
Sophie joined the refreshments team shortly after she joined Citygate, knowing it was a good way to meet people and become embedded in Citygate. And she was right, but underestimated what it would give her in other ways…

I joined the Refreshments team shortly after I arrived at Citygate, seven or eight years ago. It seemed like the quickest—and least intimidating—way to meet people. And I was right. Thinking about it, I met my now-husband serving him a coffee at our old church in Leeds.
What I enjoy most about serving is feeling not just part of "Team 1 Refreshments," but connected to everything else happening on a Sunday.
Like at home, some of the best conversations happen in the kitchen. Being on the team has helped me build real friendships, not just quick “hello” moments in the foyer. It's where community begins—over a kettle, some biscuits, and shared laughter. I spent New Year’s day at my old team leader’s wedding.
If you’re thinking about joining the team, just try it out. We’re a friendly bunch, and honestly, it’s not much more complicated than making a cup of tea at home. You don’t need special skills—just a willing to help out.
It’s a commitment of about one Sunday a month. We usually arrive at 8:15am to set up and prepare before the first service. While we do need to duck out for part of it to get everything ready for between the services, you’re still able to enjoy the worship and most of the teaching. Tasks include setting up, making drinks, serving, replenishing supplies, and washing up.
What surprised me most? The silly moments and spontaneous chats. Together with joining a life group, the simple act of serving refreshments drew me quickly into the life of the church. I’ve gained some confidence being team leader and have learnt I don’t have to be perfect with a team around me. Somebody always remembers the oat milk!
Our world is becoming more impersonal, but church is meant to be different. Sundays are often someone’s first contact with the Citygate family. A drink served with a smile adds to people’s comfort, which adds to the welcome, which adds to the feeling of community. It’s simple hospitality, allowing people slow down to talk to each other.
Want to get involved?
If you’ve been thinking about serving but aren’t sure where to start, the Refreshments Team is a great first step. It’s low-pressure, full of friendly faces, and a surprisingly powerful way to be part of something bigger. We’d love to have you!
