Hi, I’m Talitha! Up until last August, I was part of Mosaic Church in Basingstoke. Through a lovely connection between my leader Martin and Citygate’s Sean Theunissen, I got plugged in here—and that’s how this new adventure began.
I’ve always had a heart for children’s ministry. I grew up watching my dad serve faithfully with the kids every week, and I was that child who begged to help set up. As soon as I moved into youth, I joined the team and just fell in love with creating a space where every child felt seen, known, and welcomed. I think part of that comes from how much the kids leaders in my own life meant to me growing up—how they answered my endless questions and helped me grow in my relationship with Jesus. That left a lasting impact, and now I get to do the same for the children I serve. What a privilege.
When I was about 10, I made the conscious decision to follow Jesus, and I know firsthand how meaningful it is to be able to make that choice at a young age. That’s a big reason why I’m so passionate about serving with kids now—to help them find their own feet in faith.
I didn’t always know I’d do an internship like this. I was honestly struggling with my studies and wanted something more hands-on—something that gave me a real sense of what working in a church would be like. So I applied. And I’m so glad I did.
One of the best parts of this year has been getting to know the children and the team. I especially love those moments when a child who needs extra support begins to light up—when you find a way to help them engage and they slowly begin to trust you. Those are the moments I live for.
It’s also been stretching. I moved to Bournemouth not knowing anyone—not the team, not the kids. But that challenge has made me more independent and taught me to learn from others. The children have helped me so much too… whether it’s reminding me of their names or laughing with me when I get it wrong!
I’ve learned so many practical skills—how to write emails, manage time, work in an office, plan events like our Christmas party—all while keeping the heart of ministry at the centre. Every day is an opportunity to grow, and I’ve come to really love that.
One moment I’ll never forget was with a child in our Fearless Roots group (ages 5–7). We were talking about prayer, and when I asked if God had ever answered one of his prayers, he said, “Yeah… God finally heard me when He wasn’t listening to someone else.” When I explained that God can hear all of us at the same time, it blew his mind. Being part of moments like that—where a child begins to understand who God is—that’s the best kind of joy.
This internship has reaffirmed that I want to work with children and be part of church life long-term. I’ve gained a much better understanding of what ministry actually involves day-to-day, and it’s deepened my relationship with God in really personal ways.
If you’re thinking about doing this internship, here’s what I’d say: Know what you’re passionate about, and go for it. God has given me strength I didn’t know I had, and placed such kind, wise people around me to support and guide me along the way.
Citygate is such a special church. It’s incredibly diverse, and I’ve met people from so many different walks of life with such unique stories and gifts. It’s widened my view of both the world and the Church—and helped me see how important it is to include everyone, especially children, in the life of our church.
And honestly? The best way to support an intern like me is through relationship. I’m so grateful for the people and families who’ve invited me in for meals and shared life with me. Those moments have meant so much—especially coming here not knowing anyone.
If any part of my story speaks to you—or even sparks a curiosity—I’d really encourage you to consider this internship. You never know how God might use this time to shape you, grow you, and maybe even reveal something new about who you’re becoming.
And if you do decide to take the leap? I’ll be cheering you on.
